The programme will investigate a novel method of voltage measurement using the visible and ultra-violet radiation emitted from a corona discharge. The investigation will take two paths, firstly to investigate visible corona imaging and secondly to investigate the toral radiation flux suing an ultra-violet sensor. In the visible imaging approach the change in radiation intensity and its distribution will be recorded by a high speed camera. The images will be used as input to a neural network that will be trained to recognise the magnitude and waveshape of the ac voltage. Since ultra-violet light is approximately an order of magnitude more intense than visible light in a corona discharge, any technique for measuring voltage based on uv will be more practical than a visible radiation device. Currently, high speed uv imaging is not possible, although this may change in the future. The uv investigation will aim to measure ac voltages using a uv sensor. Both investigations, will record environmental parameters. The programme will conclude by considering the optimum choice of measurement and its potential implementation as a power systems voltage measurement device.
