The large volume of siliceous liquid generated during firing vitreous china bodies is important for the development of full density, high strength and translucency. The liquid is also responsible for undesirable distortion of the article during first firing and subsequent refiring processes, leading to wastage. It is important to identify improved china body compositions \and firing schedules which provide adequately fast vitrification and densification rates, but with reduced deformation rates. This is a detailed and systematic study of densification and creep rates of a model vitreous china body, combined with detailed quantitative SEM and TEM analysis of microstructures. Attention will be focussed on the volumes of mullite and liquid present at key stages during the heating processes, and efforts will be made to optimise the mullite yield in order to reduce body plasticity at high temperature. The kinetic data and understanding of the microstructural relationships will allow identification of compositions and firing schedules providing maximum densification, with minimum plasticity and thus improved process efficiency.
