Summary on Grant Application Form
Increasing demand for landfill facilities has led to the use of void spaces with steep boundary side slopes (eg quarries). Given the present reliance in the UK on landfilling for the disposal of waste, this trend is set to continue. The performance and structural integrity of typically used mineral, geosynthetic or composite lining systems for these steep slopes is controlled by the interaction between the waste body and barrier system. An area presently little studied or understood. This project aims to obtain relevant waste material properties required as input parameters for numerical models, to assess current steep side slope landfill barrier design using numerical modelling techniques, to validate these models by the instrumentation of actual barrier systems, and hence to produce guidance for designers, operators and regulators of landfill facilities. It is intended to produce a significant improvement in understanding the performance of these barrier systems, and to develop criteria for the future assessment of barrier structural integrity during construction and life long performance
