Summary on Grant Application Form
The global gas sensor market is currently dominated by American and Japanese products and is estimated at around 1,000 million/year. Market growth in this sector is rapid and is fuelled both by reductions in cost and improved performance of the sensor elements. Within this project we seek to develop processing technology for reliable multifunctional, second generation solid-state gas sensors, principally for domestic building management and food storage applications. The sensor functionality is controlled by the properties of a heterocontact between selected p- and n- type semiconducting oxides and shows improved selectivity, self-cleaning properties and failure detection compared with currently available solid-state sensors.
