Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of the project is to study the behaviour of dust particles in magnetised deposition plasmas and observe the effect of material accretion on to eletrostatically suspended dust. The study of dust in RF plasmas (e.g. for wafer etching) is high profile and important. However, the dynamics of dust in magnetised plasmas is less well known, but potentially of great interest. We shall invesitgate how the usual equalibrium established between the electric and gravitational forces on the charged dust is perturbed by; fast sputtered atoms, E x B drifts and 'sputterwind' pressure graidients. Seeding the palsma with dust will be assessed as a new method for diagnosing the sputtered atom trajectories.
