Summary on Grant Application Form
The mobile communications industry has experienced incredible growth in the past ten years and it is now widely accepted that telecommunications is a strategic driver in many national economies. The European second generation digital cellular system, GSM, has enjoyed huge success, being adopted in over 110 countries. The recent standardisation of the third generation system (Universal Mobile Telecommunication Service - UMTS) and the strong domestic production base places the U.K. at the vanguard of future mobile systems,. In order to meet the research challenges posed by third generation systems new resources are essential to support research activities. The Virtual Wireless Research Programme described in this proposal is an advanced hardware prototyping and experimental verification facility that interfaces to existing design, simulation and test resources. It will provide the necessary functionality to enhance existing research programmes in both advanced components development and systems evaluation for UMTS, in addition to supporting new research into intelligent radio architectures. Current research programmes within the Department at Oxford are such that existing collaborations with other Universities and Institutions will be well placed to participate in the utilisation of such a facility.
