Efficient and robust colour image processing is now even more important than ever before since the explosion of multimedia, advances in medical visualisation and processing, and higher standard colour quality inspection issues, to name but a few.The aim of this project is to develop and advance techniques for colour image segmentation and colour edge detection. The approach is based initially on perceptual smoothing of the colour image, using recent psychophysical research. Inspired by human subjective segmentation of an image, we propose mechanisms for segmenting colour images or detecting salient features such as colour edges, by constructing a casual, multiscale tower of image versions based on perceptual considerations. This can then be followed by the use of probabilities and contextual information to progressively segment or detect features in the smoothed tower. For this we will investigate and develop multilevel probabilistic relaxation processes.It is also planned to vigorously quantify the methods in relation to classification of two different data sets. Moreover, comparison of the results will be made against other work.
