Summary on Grant Application Form
Develop bridged crack models of the shielding of delamination cracks by stitching or short rods for mixed mode loading conditions. Develop rate dependent bridging models to account for attrition of the shielding by fatigue or creep at high temperatures. Model the micromechanics of individual stitches or short rods to relate their effect as bridging entities to geometrical and material parameters. Relate models to delamination data to determine simple engineering design rules consistent with the mechanics of bridging effects. Determine how to treat delamination initiation in design.Write a handbook summarising the results of this and prior research in a format suitable for use by field engineers, including definition of standard tests and formulae or codes for establishing design rules. All this work will involve the extension of existing collaborations with groups in the US (Rockwell, UC Santa Barbara, Aztex Co), Australia (AMRL, Melbourne) and Europe (University of Genova) on specimen preparation, experimentation and theory.
