Summary on Grant Application Form
Aluminium alloy foams (relative density of 0.1 to 0.5) are a new engineering material, produced in commercial quantities by a number of international suppliers. They have great potential in strong, stiff and lightweight structures, particularly as the core of sandwich panels. The project aims to measure the fundamental mechanical properties (stiffness, strength, energy adsorption) of metal foams, and to determine the relation between microstructure and properties. The microstructure will be measured quantitatively, and micromechanical models developed to elucidate the knock-down in strength as a function of types of imperfection, including the dispersion in cell size and cell shape. A phenomenological yield surface and hardening law will be developed and implemented within a finite element package. Finite element predictions will be compared with the measured deformation response of sandwich panels, subjected to 4pt. bend and to normal indentation loading. A design manual will be produced to help industrial partners design with metallic foams.
