Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal is a theoretical (both numerical and analytic) investigation into control, tracking and manipulation of patterns in spatiotemporal chaos in nonlinear dynamical systems; the most recent advances in the field of nonlinear dynamics and chaos. The programme emphasises the fundamental science of control concepts in optical physics and considers its potential technological applications to lasers. It builds on the recent contributions of the investigator to control of pattern-forming systems. The proposed control utilises a novel feedback approach to stabilise the underlying unstable patterns embedded in spatiotemporal chaos without modifying the original dynamical systems - a non-invasive approach. New algorithms will be devised based on such an approach. A goal of these investigations is to develop practical control schemes for experimental implementation. The dynamical systems to be investigated are two and three level lasers described by time-dependent partial differential equations in two-dimensional space.
