Summary on Grant Application Form
It is proposed to build a test rig for conducting small scale explosion loading experiments on structures and equipment. The principle of operation will be based on the present rig which has been extremely successful in producing repeatable pulse pressure loading for studying the effects of blast loading on structures. The main limitations with the present facility are its restricted use after normal working hours and manpower requirements. Notwithstanding these limitations, the present rig was primarily designed for medium scale tests up to 4 bar pulse pressure. The proposed new test rig will be easier to use, more productive and have operational improvements. These features will enable the test rig to be used by a greater number of research students and enable more fundamental problems concerned with the failure of pulse loaded structures to be studied. The research to be conducted with this new test rig is aimed at improving the understanding of explosion loading on structures and equipment in connection with offshore safety, the use of small scale experimental techniques in modelling structural response to explosion loading and the provision of well defined data for model evaluation.
