The new single quadrupole mass spectrometer would provide reliable, fast turn-round, high mass-range (;up to 20 kDa) spectra for a range of projects in the general areas of:+ Synthesis of medicinally important compounds+ Transition metal chemistry+ New polymeric materialsTo achieve the necessary mass range and analytical detail, the following inlet/ionization systems are required: HPLC, ESI, APCI, EI and CI. High resolution mass spectra of low MW samples would be carried out by our MS9 spectrometer (see below), whilst any analysis requiring both high m/z values and high mass resolution would be sent to the EPSRC service at Swansea.Our current MS9 is 30 years old, suffers problems of unreliability, and has a mass limit of 1600 Da. Nevertheless, it does allow high-resolution mass analysis and linked scanning ( MS/MS ) to be carried out on relatively small molecules, and it forms an integral part of an EPSRC research grant on the reactions of gas-phase ions involving the Daresbury SRS facilities. The last two applicants would considerably expand and develop the use of the MS9 for fundamental research based on mass spectrometry.In total 14 academic staff would exploit the new mass spectrometer to support projects totalling 500K per annum, involving 10 current Research Council grants.
