Summary on Grant Application Form
The main objective of this proposal is to establish a Temporal Analysis of Products (TAP) Reactor facility and to use this to study the mechanisms of heterogeneously catalysed reactions. The aims of the research are:(1) To investigate the reaction schemes and identify reaction intermediates in model selective and non-selective reactions and to determine the kinetics of interaction with the catalyst surface. It is planned to study well defined oxide catalysts in the first instance; eg (VO)2P207 for the selective oxidation of hydrocarbons and U308 for the total oxidation of chlorinated hydrocarbons.(2) To use the derived information to develop new and improved catalysts for both selective oxidation and total oxidation.(3) To extend the use of the TAP methodology to reactions other than oxidation; eg selective hydrogenation, and the synthesis of fine chemicals. It is proposed to use the new facility in combination with other existing catalysis infrastructure available at Cardiff, in particular in situ techniques that are established at UWCC (namely Raman, FTIR, MAS NMR spectroscopies and powder X-ray diffraction) to provide improved insights into the molecular events occurring during catalytic reactions.
