A range of novel chemically functional oligomers and polymers will be synthesized in connection with four parallel projects all of which currently enjoy considerable financial support from EPSRC and industry. In the first two of these, a variety of hydrophilic and hydrophobic telechelic oligomers will be synthesized principally by oxidative cleavage (e.g. ozonolysis) of high molar mass polymeric precursors, a technique developed at Lancaster and dubbed constructive degradation . These oligomers, which can be tailored to have a variety of end groups, will then be used as reactive components for the construction of novel amphiphilic block and graft copolymers and networks for use in reactive coatings and in materials with potential biomedical applications such as tissue supports and contact and intraocular lenses. In the third project, potentially flame retardant chain-reaction polymers bearing covalently bound phosphorus- and silicon-containing groups will be synthesized. The fourth project entails the synthesized. The fourth project entails the synthesis of novel, soluble, regioregular chemically functionalized polythiophenes. These polymers have potential applications as, for example the active components in light-emitting diodes and amperometric biosensors.
