Summary on Grant Application Form
The main motivation for this project is the development of advanced ceramic materials and their increasing usage in load bearing applications at temperature where time-dependent deformation determines the operational lifetime. The principal advantages of using indentatio creep as a test method are: (1) the high hydrostatic stress beneath the indenter inhibits fracture and thus allows the mechanics and mechanisms of the deformation processes to be investigated, (2) the applied stress state is similar to that developed in many practical applications, (3) the ease and hence low cost of specimen preparation and (4) the relative rapidity and low cost of the test method and (5) only small volumes of material are required. This study would investigate the influence of experimental variables, i.e. load, indenter geometry and hardness, heating of indenter, friction coefficient and variable loading on the measured deformations. The engineering ceramics to be studied would include magnesium oxide, silicon carbide and zirconia. The Li, Henshall, Hooper and Easterling model of indentation creep would be used to interpret the measured data.
