|
The development of laboratory-on-a-chip technologies is now gaining world-wide commercial momentum. However, in the UK we have concentrated on developing stand-alone component devices rather than complete integrated systems. This application brings together previously developed devices and exploits our microfabrication and related tools through the joint interdisciplinary collaboration of a consortium of universities and companies. The project will employ electrokinetic technologies such as travelling electric field fractionation and electrohydrodynamic pumping to analyse blood samples. Such cell separations are routine procedures in all hospital diagnostic laboratories and the development of an automated, low-cost, chip based blood fractionator would be of enormous advantage. By collaborating with the participating companies, and using previously developed electrokinetic and optical sub-units, we will concentrate on the aspects of system integration, ease of use and manufacturing, reliability, self-testing, redundancy, fail-safe operation and interconnection between a disposable chip and support hardware.
