Summary on Grant Application Form
Recent studies in non-linear dynamics have revealed a range of new `vibro-impact' phenomena (i.e. phenomena containing repeated impacts between vibrating solid bodies) that has enormous potential for achieving productivity and energy-saving improvements in many industrial processes, particularly those involving the cutting of materials. Since Professor Babitsky joined this University and introduced his work to the West, the research work here has developed rapidly and we now propose to expand our new research facility to aggressively exploit this new technology for the benefit of U.K. industry.Three leading high-technology companies in the aerospace and energy fields (Rolls Royce, British Aerospace and BG Technology) are proposing to support two 3 year programmes of work relating to the cutting of metals, composites and rocks using this vibro-impact technology to a total sum of 308,000 + V.A.T. Within this sum, they are prepared to contribute a total of 50,525 (incl. V.A.T.) towards the cost of equipment needed to support the research and build up the facility. We are seeking funding support from JREI of 50478 to make up the rest of the cost.Start date: 1 March 1999Period: 3 years
