Summary on Grant Application Form
(i) Detailed LDA and PIV measurements are to be made in small scale turbulent mixing jets. These measurements, involving LDA operation with a special front-end short focus lens to provide a microscopic measurement volume, will be related to an existing research contract between the University of Manchester and ICI Technology Centre, Runcorn.(ii) The LDA equipment will be made available for use at the University of Loughborough (Professor J. J. McGuirk) in a study of the behaviour of supersonic free jets sponsored by BAe Warton. Here, the high bandwidth of the BSA processors and their ability to work at low signal to noise ratios will offer special advantages.(iii) LDA measurements (augmented by PIV) will be made to support research activities at BAe Warton and the University of Manchester concerned with vortex flows, novel aircraft configurations at high angles of attack, and ABSTOVL ground effect flows. This experimental programme will make use of the unique large scale wind tunnel facilities in the University's Goldstein Laboratory.Start date: February 1999Period: Three years
