Summary on Grant Application Form
Each of the applicants has found that their existing and extensive analytical facilities exhibit some drawbacks with respect the absolute determination of molecular weight or particle size, particularly when working with complex macromolecular or colloidal systems. Field flow fractionation (FFF) methods are capable of addressing many of these concerns. Secondly, the synergistic benefits to be obtained by pooling the previous experience of the applicants, who have not previously worked together, has been recognised for the development, use and exploitation of FFF methods within the University of Leeds. Thirdly, FFF methods are relatively unknown or little used by industry and there is considerable scope for interaction to mutual benefit. This situation is not the case in the USA, where the utilisation of FFF methods has been more widespread. FFF methods have a role to play in the analysis of most polymers, copolymers, suspensions, emulsions, colloids and partially gelled systems and are well suited for use in the food, paints, cosmetics, inks and other industries. A case is made for developing novel, coupled FFF methods, for the use of FFF in support of future and existing research programmes and to increase competitiveness through the establishment of a UK FFF Industrial User Group.Start date: 1.1.1998 Period: 3 Years
