The Malvern Ultrasizer is an ultrasonic interferometer, which offers particle-sizing capabilities between 10-nm and 1000lm. The fundamental interactions between particles in concentrated non-ionic and ionic stabilised dispersions will be studied using novel ultrasonic techniques, supported by static light scattering techniques. It is difficult to study directly the mechanisms by which surfactants and stabilisers affect particle interactions in concentrated systems using conventional methods. The ultrasonic spectrometer also makes it possible to study particle interactions in concentrated systems noninvasively. It is expected that results will be relevant to a basic understanding of the stability of dispersions used in foods, paints and inks as well as many other industries. The requested equipment will permit Colour Chemistry and Food Science to do collaborative studies on the fundamentals of dispersion and emulsion stability. Sample dilution is a major source of uncertainty in laser diffraction techniques for particle size determination. Particle sizing without sample dilution will be an enormous advantage in the study of optically opaque inks and food emulsions. The equipment requested will form part of an established infrastructure of particle characterisation instrumentation supported by world class expertise in relevant areas including ultrasound characterisation of materials.
