Over the past 5 years, innovative research work within Strathclyde's Engineering and Science Faculties in the areas of:+ high voltage materials engineering; + advanced sensors, sensor systems and optical materials;+ bio-compatible materials and novel polymeric membranes;+ structural materials, ceramic and advanced polymeric composites;has suffered through the lack of an appropriate environmental conditioning facility. Composite polymer and structural materials research would have benefited significantly from a facility to regulate temperature and humidity. High voltage materials engineering, advanced sensors, sensor systems and optical materials require the additional capability to deliver high voltage and current to validate component and sensor operation over a wide range of environmental parameters. This proposal seeks to develop the infrastructure to support work in all of the above areas through the provision of a customised climatic chamber which can regulate the environmental conditions over the range of -40 C to +150 C and 10% to 98 %RH (Relative Humidity) with bus bar access to provide a high voltage excitation capability of up 20 kV and current delivery of 10 kA. Use of facility will be made immediately over a broad range of basic and applied research programmes within the Engineering and Science Faculties.
