The solid state NMR spectrometer requested is essentially a major upgrade for an instrument that has been operation for the past 8 years. The new spectrometer will underpin research supported by the Research Councils, the EU and industry in fuel and polymer science, catalysis, organic geochemistry and agricultural chemistry. The distinctive features of the research programme are the use of (i) quantitative L;C measurements to elucidate the structural characteristics of a range of materials including coals, petroeleum source rocks, catalyst deposits, polymers and plant cell walls and (ii) high temperature measurements to follow carbonisation/degradation processes in-situ. The new spectrometer will enable Strathclyde to continue as the leading centre for quantitative solid state 13C NMR in the UK. The research programme is multi-disciplinary in nature and involves extensive collaboration by the collaborator and colleagues at Strathclyde with both industry and other HEls. Further, the research spans programmes supported by EPSRC (combustion/clean coal technology, catalysis, polymer degradation /fire retardancy), BBSRC (plant cell walls) and NERC (organic geochemistry).
