The proposed experiments at Strathclyde University will exploit the power supplies to investigate high frequency (tens of Giga-Hertz) beam-wave instabilities, in particular the FEL, CRM, CARM and Cherenkov interactions. A reverse guide field Raman FEL will be studied in the small and large signal long pulse amplifier regimes using a controlled microwave input signal. The parameter space of this normal operation will be mapped out, that is saturated output power, efficiency and gain as a function of frequency. The FEL hardware will exploited to investigate a range of important physical phenomena which can occur in such systems. In the first instance the evolution of the Self Amplification of Spontaneous Emission (SASE) process will be investigated and compared to the phenomena of superradiant amplification of coherent input radiation.A CARM oscillator will be constructed for operation at the fundamental of the cyclotron frequency, and its output power, efficiency and frequency will be investigated as a function of the electron beam parameters by tuning of the magnetic field configuration.NADA electronics will research the arrangements for connecting the power supplies in parallel and series and will then construct the specially customised units required to fulfill the application at the University of Strathclyde.
