Summary on Grant Application Form
The ultimate goal of this research is to provide a description of the transition to chaotic dynamics in the Henon family of maps, analogous to the description provided by kneadig theory in one-dimensional dynamics. We have devised a programme for the proof of Pruning Front conjecture of Cvitanovic, Gunaratne and Proccacia which states that any map in the Henon family can be obtained by destroying (pruning away) some of the dynamics of Smales horseshoe map.The techniques to be used are topological in character and should apply in a more general context to give a quite complex descriptions of the mechanism of two-dimensional transitions to chaos.
