Summary on Grant Application Form
This is a joint research programme between the Universities of Southampton and Leeds with the industrial support of Pirelli and British Telecom. The objective of the project is to develop a 1.3 um Nd-doped fluoraluminate integrated glass amplifier. The device will integrate on the same chip an active Nd gain waveguide on which a grating is written for 1050nm ASE suppression and on a waveguide configured as an asymmetric or cladding mode coupler to filter out the ASE. The amplified signal will be channeled into a 1x16 splitter. Film deposition will be by DIGS (deposition by inverted glass spinning), a new and unique process developed at Southampton for processing AlF glass. Waveguide channels and gratings will be written directly by patterning or realised by direct UV writing in Ce-doped AlF glass. Leeds will provide waveguides prepared by ion-exchange (IE) in parallel with waveguides by DIGS. Southampton will demonstrate gain, ASE suppression and power distribution and, with Pirelli will design, construct and evaluate the integrated device. Pirelli and BT will undertake systems test and field trial.
