Summary on Grant Application Form
The research program will develop transmitter modules for dense WDM systems and optical millimetre systems. The program will first tackle issues with regard to fibre DFB performance, such as the stability of the phase shift at high pump power levels unidirectionality, and single-polarisation operation, before addressing packaging issues to facilitate repeatable and cost-effective production, and stable drift-free optical characteristics. Fibre DFBs have significant potential benefits in WDM systems, particularly as reliability and redundancy can be built into transmitter design. The robustness of fibre DFB laser operation against optical feedback and pump failure (redundancy) will be first tested in the ORC using BER measurement system. The second outcome will be the development of a 10 channel WDM transmitter module operating on a 100GHz channel spacing, which will be used in system demonstrator trials at BT Laboratories, and in WDM and CATV systems at Pirelli. The third outcome will be the development of 60GHz optical millimetre wave transmitter modules.
