Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal is intended to increase the effectiveness of collaboration between client and designer, by exploiting electronic communications media during a building's design phase. The University of Cambridge's new multi-million pound Computer Laboratory will be the test bed for the research. Uniquely as a client, staff and students of the new laboratory are highly committed to using computer communications, while the architects are experienced in using CAD. The research team will set up a web site to hold a variety of project information originating from the architects, including 3-D visualisations, and will simplify, edit and interlink this information. The web site will be liked to a bulletin board used by the client to provide feedback on the design proposals. The research team will maintain a complete record of all electronic communication. They will use this and other data to assess the management issues surrounding the control of information, accessibility and security, and will evaluate the effectiveness of this method of collaboration. It is anticipated that this exploitation of information technology will enhance communication and ensure the delivery of a completed project which satisfies client needs. The project's use of IT is both novel and timely, and holds considerable promise.
