Summary on Grant Application Form
Fibre optic links will be carrying traffic at data rates approaching Tbits/s I the next decade, whereas data rates of tens of Mbits/s are difficult to provide to mobile users. Free space optical channels have the ability to remove this bottlenext, by providing in-building mobile bandwidths of upwards to 100s of Mbit/s. All the alternative systems approaches require relatively complex transceivers to acquire and maintain an optical channel with area coverage, comprising of a diversity of optical, optoelectronic and electronic components. The benefits of these systems can only be accessed with an integrated transceivers designed to support and performance benefits this brings. The programme will demonstrate these benefits and produce integrated transceivers designed to support ATM transmission at 155Mbits/s in an office environment.Work will initially specify a typical in-building user model, and refine system and components specifications from this. Custom Silicon and Opto- components will then be produced to meet these specifications, and these will be integrated into subsystems and demonstrators. The final system will be used to transmit ATM computer and video data in a real operating environment.
