The research is concerned with the development of an optoelectronic system that can be used to measure the concentration of drugs in a living eye. new drugs are continually under development to treat eye infections, but before use on man these compounds undergo trials on model laboratory animals such as the rabbit. Many of these tests are stressful. An example is the procedure of sampling by paracentesis which involves use of a syringe and hypodermic needle to pierce the cornea of the test animal to whose eye the drug has previously been applied. The sample fluids, such as aqueous humour, are then analysed on a spectrofluorophotometer for their drug content. The sampling process is painful, can carry the risk of infection and may lead to blindness. The technique also yields discrete rather than continuous measurements. Our aim is to devise an optoelectronic system which avoids direct sampling by turning the animal eye into a virtual cuvette. By use of absorbance and fluorescence spectra recorded from the eye using the proposed system, the concentration of various drugs can be deduced.
