Summary on Grant Application Form
The recent development of technically and commercially viable particulate rubbers has opened the way to the long-standing rubber industry objective of continuous mixing/processing. Hitherto, the industry has been constrained to batch mixing by the supply of rubber in bale form. Currently available continuous mixer designs are clearly not able to exploit fully the process advantages of the new particulate feedstock. Advances in our fundamental understanding of rubber mixing, gained from the study of batch processes, have enabled us to produce a new design concept for a continuous mixing system to overcome these limitations. Work is now needed to understand the detailed behaviour of the new system and a project with five stages is planned: (1) build a prototype, based on current knowledge and preliminary modelling, (2) use the prototype to gain an experimental understanding of the new system and to support the development of predictive simulation models, (3) use the simulation models to improve the prototype design, (4) use results from the improved prototype to test the simulation predictions and (5) consolidate the simulation methods for process design and scale-up.
