Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of the proposed project is to apply a recently developed tight-binding plus dispersion model for the stacking of graphite planes to the study of multi-walled carbon nanotubes. The issues that will be addressed include the observation of surface superpatterns in STM images and the observation of asymmetric fringes in HRTEM images of multi-walled nanotubes. More generally, the aim of the project will be to understand the interplay between the attractive inter-layer orbital interactions, the repulsive inter-layer interactions, and the underlying bonding connectivity of each individual tube in determining the physical properties of multi-walled carbon nanotubes.
