The aim of this project is the development of a new system for catalytic asymmetric epoxidation, based upon a homogeneous procedure recently developed in our laboratories, permitting catalytic enantioselective oxygen transfer under near-ambient conditions on a very short timescale (<2h). The chemistry involved is novel, uses inexpensive reagents, no transition metals, and is amenable to scale up. In preliminary experimentation we have achieved ees of up to 73% for trans-stilbene as substrate, in very clean 1 hour reactions carried out at 0 C or at room temperature, in the presence of as little as 0.3 mol% of catalyst.Maximization of the potential of these catalysts for asymmetric epoxidation is the central objective of this proposal.
