Summary on Grant Application Form
In the programme proposed I will develop the technique of Frequency-Domain Phase Measurement and related approaches to enable a complete characterisation of the amplitude and phase of ultrashort optical pulses. Central to the concept will be the use of non-linear detection by tow-photon adsorption in a photodiode structure to provide cross-correlation between a control pulse and its frequency-filtered replica. The research activity will involve design and evaluation of an appropriate optical configuration to implement the correct frequency-filtering and correlation steps followed by a driver and acquisition system to record, in real-time, the unique deriving from the sonogram trace the amplitude and phase characteristic of the pulse in real-time. An evaluation period will aim to assess the accuracy and performance of the system for a range of pulse durations and wavelengths using the unique range of ultrashort-pulse laser sources available at the university of St Andrews.
