Most tunnel devices that have demonstrated very impressive diode performance have been one-offs and reverse engineering (closing the loop between design and experimental realisation) has never been established as manufacturable. IN GR/J67710, it was shown that manufacturability of tunnel devices was not possible using standard commercial practises. This project will try to establish manufacturability using state of the art techniques at every stage. If we fail, tunnel research with any device pretensions should be turned off until such tie as someone succeeds. If we succeed then the effort, mainly in industry, should then be aimed at cost reduction while maintaining the necessary degree of tight control. This project involves the design of multilayers, their growth using MBE, the qualification of wafers by SIMS and TEM, the fabrication of wafers of identical services and the collection of statistics on such diodes.The general thrust of even tighter tolerances of materials for specific device performance is common to all areas of microelectronics and optoelectronics and is an essential precondition for the exploitation of mesoscopic physics.
