Summary on Grant Application Form
The current policy of permitting freedom of movement for clay brickwork infill and cladding panels within concrete frames has been criticised for leading to problems with workmanship, complicated support detailing, increased costs and a general lack of overall robustness in buildings. A number of eminent engineers and architects within the masonry field consider that an alternative policy of 'planned' restraint to the long-term irreversible moisture expansion and thermal movement of clay masonry panels will lead to cheaper, better quality, more robust buildings overall and enable innovative, less complicated forms of masonry construction for use on tall frame buildings to be developed. The concept of ''lanned'' restraint cannot presently be applied in practice, however, as only a very limited amount of research work has been undertaken in this area and basic design data are still lacking.Full-scale testing of novel forms of continuous clay masonry cladding are therefore proposed to validate the concept of 'planned' restraint, using the seven-storey high concrete test frame at the BRE Cardington Site. That facility presents a unique opportunity to obtain essential experimental stress and strain data from restrained masonry panels, which can then be used to verify models developed from small-scale laboratory tests.
