Summary on Grant Application Form
In order to comply with the HAUC Specifications good quality stone is used for backfilling trenches and the excavated materials are in the main disposed. In some instances the granular materials are recycled. The aim of this research programme is to investigate methods of reusing the clayey materials arising from the trenches so that a larger proportion of excavated materials can be used for backfilling compared to the present. Excavated materials from two areas in the UK will beinvestigated. They will be classified using simple methods. Soil modifiers and binders will then be used to produce backfill materials which comply with the HAUC Specifications. This research should result in a reduction in the amount of material which has to be disposed to landfills and in savings in the amount of good quality stone used for backfilling trenches. This research is likely also to lead to savings in the cost of reinstatement and disruption and economic loss to road users.- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Keywords describing areas of proposalas-dug materials, tench backfill
