The aim of the project is to establish an approach for designing an intelligent integrated vehicle motion controller. This controller will act as a driver support system to simplify the role of the driver in closed-loop vehicle control. The key benefit of the research is vehicle safety, as the intelligent vehicle will provide substantially improved dynamic stability and predictablity during severe manoeuvres. This characteristic is also a pre-requisite for automatic collision avoidance systems, and autonomous driving as part of an automated highway system. other benefits are the ability to introduce product variants by software changes, the flexibility to adapt to driver preferences, automatic adaptation to manufacturing variations, vehicle health monitoring, and freeing the design of the driver's controls from mechanical constraints. The project will be undertaken by Leeds University, Rover Group and Stirling Dynamics. It will involve controller development and evaluation in simulation. Stirling Dynamics is a new entrant into the automotive sector, and will bring expertise in aerospace modelling and control. Experimental evaluation will be undertaken in a follow-on project.
