Summary on Grant Application Form
This work focuses on the adhesion of and implementation of thermoplastic composite materials in vehicle structures for use in safety critical applications. Such assemblies hold out much promise for use in a variety of industrial applications but, in particular, the automotive industry where the development of lightweight vehicles is a key priority. It is imperative to provide data on the effect of processing to achieve high integrity assemblies suitable for structural use. A major part will be to confirm the crash reliability of these assemblies in lightweight automotive applications. Performance of these assemblies will rely on the nature of the joining technology. As polypropylene is notoriously difficult to bond to, some attention must be focused on the bonding system. Modification of the polypropylene surface by a variety of techniques eg chemical, laser etc, will be used to produce a consistent and reliable bonding surface for the adhesive systems.
