Birmingham University has collaborated with Jaguar for the last five years in research aimed at the development of autonomous intelligent cruise control systems using millimetric radar, including membership of the EU 4th Framework AC-ASSIST project. In the radar system used to date, significant amounts of potentially useful information is discarded.This proposal is part of a joint project with Jaguar and Cranfield to examine the extent to which this information may be used. In addition to contributing to provision of the test vehicle and development and evaluation of the final demonstrator, Birmingham's primary role is in the characterisation and understanding of the radar data, and the development of low complexity algorithms for detection of road features and other road objects such as bridges and gantries. Birmingham are currently engaged in a PhD study, funded by Jaguar, in which some conventional image processing techniques are being applied to the real radar data to indicate road direction. These techniques will be extended and applied to the proposed demonstrator system. Such work is not being performed in any other UK research programmes known to the investigators and may well have a significant influence on the UK capability for product development in this area.
