Weakly bound dimers formed between pairs of chiral melcules will be investigated in detail using high resolution microwave fourier transform and diode laser infrared transient adsorption spectroscopy. The exisiting will be produced in specially designed supersonic nozzles. The existing spectrometers will be modified to provide greater sensitivity and higher resolution.From the spectroscopy it should be possilbe to obtain details of the structure and dynamics of the chiral complexes. This, in conjunction with good quality ab initio calculations, will provide details of the intermolecular interactions. Comparisons of R-R and R-S pairs will enable us to invesitgate how the interactions depend upon the chirality of the molecules involved. This should also help us to develop modles to let us understand how the interactions change when one chiral molecule is replaced by its enantiomer.Clusters to be studied will be simple chiral molecules containing te -OH or -NH2 groups. These will include butan-2-ol, d-fluoro propan-2-ol and their amino analogues. They should yield hydrogen-bonded dimers whose structure will also be determined by attractive dispersion forces and steric repulsion. The relative importance of the effects will be investigated.
