Summary on Grant Application Form
This project will develop distributed systems for future mobile applications. The support provided will be tailored to operate over the TETRA wireless Network and will be validated using test applications. In more detail, future mobile applications will be required to survive extended network disconnection, and hence will demand support for communication across both space and time. Such requirements are accentuated by the possibility of transitions between trunked and direct modes of operation in networks conforming to the TETRA standard. The support platform developed by the project will be based on the space paradigm. The feasibility of using this approach to support mobile applications has already been demonstrated by the investigators and this project will focus on the technical challenges of developing and deploying a comprehensive tuple-space based distributed systems platform to operate over a TETRA network. The platform will be validated by developing a number of test mobile applications, based on requirements as part of a related DTI funded project entitled: Emergency Multimedia . More specifically, the test applications will be based on the requirements of the Langdale and Ambelside Mountain Rescue Unit who will be trailing TETRA technology during the lifetime of this project.
