Summary on Grant Application Form
It is proposed to develop a low-temperature scanning near-field optical microscope for studying cw and time-resolved optical spectra of semiconductor nanostructures. High transmission fibre tips will be developed to enhance sensitivity, and to permit ultrafast time-resolved photoluminescence to be measured. The electric states, and free carrier exciton relaxation will be studied in single undoped and modulation-doped v-groove quantum wires. Carrier trapping into the wire, and the subsequent relaxation and recombination will be investigated. The dynamics of coupled wire states will also be investigated. Interlevel dynamics of electrons in quantum dots will be studied in order to evaluate the roles of electron-phonon and electron-electron scattering in producing ultrafast relaxation.
