The overall aim of a substantial research programme already in place at Glasgow University is to obtain a better understanding of how magnetic nanostructures can contribute to future sensing and storage applications at ultra-high densities using state-of-the-art lithographic and microscopical methods. The benefits Scheinfein will bring to the programme have been summarised above. During Scheinfeins visit we shall concentrate on improving our understanding of switching mechanisms and fields in nano-elements as a function of shape, size and composition. We shall work on single layer alloy films and spin-valve material. Particular foci will be the effect of different end shapes and the role of artificial defects that can be introduced deliberately into the elements during the fabrication process. Such defects could act as controllable nucleation or pinning sites.
