The performance, integrity and refinement of automotive brakes are critically dependent on the materials selected for the rotor (disc or drum) and the corresponding pad or shoe friction lining. Currently the rotor is manufactured from grey cast iron and the friction material is a complex composite material comprising non-asbestos fibres, particles and fillers in a phenolic resin matrix. These materials are continuously under review and in particular, a number of lightweight alternatives have been proposed for the cast iron rotor, mostly based on metal matrix composites or a hard surface coating on a lightweight alloy substrate. However progress has been hindered by the lack of an integrated approach to the multi-disciplinary problems of friction pair materials selection and the limited liaison between academic researchers and industrial technologists in the field of automotive brakes. The proposed network will help to address this issue by providing a forum for engineers and scientists working in automotive braking and related areas to meet on a regular basis in order to exchange technical information and ideas and to encourage collaborative, interdisciplinary research programmes to the mutual benefit of those involved.
