Summary on Grant Application Form
Our new many-body coherent-potential approximation (CPA) has recently been applied to calculate the electronic structure and resistivity of the paramagnetic state in the one-band double exchange model of maganites. No ferromagnetic order was found for the case with local spins S=1/2. We expect ferromagnetism to appear in the more difficult cases of S=1 and S=3/2; if not we shall seek to modify the CPA method. The effect on the resistivity of varying magnetic order will be investigated and compared with experiment. The work will be extended to the more realistic case of two bands with symmetry and electron-phonon coupling will be included. Local spins and phonons are treated quantum-mechanically, not in the classical approximation used by Millis and others.Spin-polarised tunnelling through a grain boundary will be investigated, initially in a one electron approach, followed by an attempt at a many-body treatment.
