Summary on Grant Application Form
This project will deals with the synthesis of highly Lewis acidic organometallic complexes (MR2)= where M=Al, Ga, I or a trivalent lanthanide metal and R=alkyl, allyl, benzyl and/or Cp. The work builds on our recent synthesis of (AlCp2)+ and (Ycp2)+ and their application as polymerisation initiators. The structure and bonding in such highly electron-deficient systems will be explored, including aspects such as cation-anion interactions and the potential for stabilising cationic main group species through p bonding. Particular targets are (GaCp2)+, one of the few as yet unknown metallocenes, and the possibility of generating (LnCp2)+ complexes. The reactivity of these species will be explored including their suitability as catalysts or initiators in olefin polymerisations.
