Summary on Grant Application Form
The Visiting Fellow will investigate how to provide efficient high performance software on distributed shared memory machines and on clusters (clumps) of shared memory nodes. This research will be undertaken using the well established LAPACK and ScaLAPACK libraries as the vehicles, LAPACK having been designed for shared memory machines, while ScaLAPACK is designed for distributed memory machines. The research will look at whether or not it is feasible to call LAPACK from ScaLAPACK on shared memory nodes, and at the sort of performance that can be expected from LAPACK and Sca LAPACK on distributed shared memory machines, as well as the sort of enhancement that may be necessary to make LAPACK efficient. As a second strand of research the Visiting Fellow will investigate and advise on the issues involved in setting up a UK Netsolve service, as well as considering how to incorporate commercial software such as the NAG Libraries into such a service.
