Summary on Grant Application Form
Starting with low energy (1K) phonons injected into liquid 4He from a solid heater, the spatio-temporal evolution of the acoustic energy will be studied to determine hoe high frequency phonons are created. The kinetics of phonon scattering will be calculated using the 3pp and 4pp collision integrals. At energies below 8K the 3pp are most important but beyond 8K they are not allowed so 4pp must be considered to upscatter the phonons beyond critical energy of w=10K where the phonons are stable. The best experimentally determined phonon dispersion data will be used to calculate the phonon spectrum as it develops. Finally numerical calculations will be made to compare with the experimental data.
