Summary on Grant Application Form
Over the last few years some understanding of collective phenomena in systems far from equilibrium has been developed. In particular questions of phase transitions, symmetry breaking and phase separation have been addressed and ideas have been borrowed from the vast knowledge of equilibrium phase transitions developed over the last forty years. During the two short visits we propose continuing our studies of non-equilibrium systems. In particular we wish to understand conditions under which symmetry breaking is possible, particularly in one dimension. We also propose exploring the wider application of simple non-equilibrium models in the broader context of soft condensed matter and biophysics.
