Summary on Grant Application Form
We wish to look at aspects of the asymptotic behaviour of trajectories of dynamical systems with noncompact groups of symmetries. These systems are of great interest when looking at nonlinear PDEs on infinite domains, especially for problems in pattern formation. They are also of interest as examples of systems where noncompactness plays a decisive role in the dynamics. We will focus on generic drifting behaviour of relative equilibria and how this can change on changing a parameter; this question (for flows) involves examining parametrised families of elements in the Lie algebra of the group and unfoldings of exceptional points in the algebra. We also wish to look at drifting behaviour for nontrivial dynamics in this setting, for example noncompact group extensions of hyperbolic, periodic or quasiperiodic dynamics, and try to understand the implications for reaction diffusion problems on infinite domains with euclidean symmetries. In particular, we hope to be able to explain drifting properties of unstable spiral waves in this way.
